Agadir, Morocco –Although he had a three-stroke lead, it was definitely no walk in the park. Velten Meyer had to work hard for his first Pro Golf Tour title at the Océan Golf Club in 2026. On the final day, Meyer played 33 holes before finally holding the trophy with a sense of relief. "I’m pretty exhausted, but very happy overall," Meyer said of his victory over Maxime Palenik of Belgium, who finished second, three strokes behind. Round two of the second tournament of the Morocco Swing was cut short on Friday due to strong winds. Meyer was among the players who consequently had to play more golf than usual on the third day.
"Of course, staying bogey-free is impressive"
The key to Meyer’s first victory on the Pro Golf Tour was his consistency. Despite the difficult conditions in Agadir, the 31-year-old remained bogey-free for all 54 holes. “My ball-striking was consistent all week,” said Meyer after shooting a 65 and two rounds of 67. "I actually didn't putt particularly well, which might sound strange. My short game, on the other hand, was excellent when I needed it. Staying bogey-free overall is impressive, of course.” This achievement is all the more impressive considering Meyer still cannot swing pain-free due to hip surgery he underwent two years ago.
He says he feels the problem area most acutely on long days, such as the final round of the Pro Golf Tour Océan. After winning the HotelPlanner Tour title in 2022, he continued playing regular tour golf the following year. In 2024, after experiencing persistent issues, he finally decided to undergo surgery. "A lot has happened since my victory a few years ago. I played a lot on the DP World Tour and the HotelPlanner Tour, but then I had to have another hip operation. It took much longer than expected, and I struggled with pain for a long time. Even now, I still feel it—on such long days, the strain is really high.”
After a challenging season last year, Meyer is competing in his inaugural season on the Pro Golf Tour. Earlier this season, he was in contention for the title at the Golf Mad Open in Turkey. "I know I can compete on higher-level tours as well. Still, I see this as an opportunity to try new things, get healthy, and continue to develop," he said. At the Pro Golf Tour Ocean, he skipped a practice round to conserve energy. "After several consecutive days of tournament play, I just wanted to rest a bit. It seems to have paid off."
"Had a very pleasant week in Morocco"
Overall, Meyer, like many other players, was impressed with both the course at the Océan Golf Club and his time in Morocco. He said, "The week was very enjoyable. My girlfriend was my caddie, which helped me cope with the jet lag and conserve energy. We went to the beach, the weather was great the whole time, and I was pleasantly surprised by the restaurants. All in all, it was a tiring but very good week."
With this victory, Velten Meyer moves up to fourth place in the Order of Merit. Kristof Ulenaers (Belgium), Dario Antonisse, and Koen Kouwenaar (both from the Netherlands) remain at the top of the rankings. Alejandro Pedryc (Poland) follows in fifth place. After the Morocco Swing, the players will head to the Sedin Open by On the Tee in Slovakia from May 27 to 29.
