Season Start under Egyptian sun

Pro Golf Tour 2016

With the Red Sea Egyptian Classic and the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic the 2016 Pro Golf Tour season tees off in Egypt in January.

Ain Sokhna/Egypt − What a great season Philipp Mejow has had in 2015! The 27-year-old made the last year the most successful of his whole career. Two victories on the Pro Golf Tour at nine Top-5 rankings did not only make Mejow receive 35.000 Euro prize money, but the overall tour victory. The man from Berlin had already laid the foundation of his success in January - in Ain Sokhna. With 7 under par Mejow had to face his fellow countrymen Hinrich Arkenau and Benedict Staben in a play-off for the trophy of the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic. On the third extra-hole, a 335 meter hole 18, Mejow secured his win by birdie. He was rewarded with 5000 Euro prize money and also as many ranking points. Who knew, if those weren’t exactly that points that made him overall champion eight months later. Anyhow, back in January ’15, Mejow could score even with Dutch Reinier Saxton.

Only a few days earlier Saxton had managed to win the season’s first tournament on a different course-combination - the Red Sea Egyptian Classic. With three strokes advantage the Dutchman, who already won the tour in 2011, finished best. Ranked as second was the Swiss Benjamin Rusch.

And the Pro Golf Tour Order of Merit 2015 looked like this:

  1. Mejow, Philipp
  2. Rusch, Benjamin
  3. Saxton Reinier

Is it a coincidence? It seems, as if a good ranking in Ain Sokhna nearly guarantees a promotion to the Challenge Tour. Who will be the winners this year?

The Red Sea Egyptian Classic 2016 starts on January 19th. Follow the tournament in our Livescoring for further information.
